Saxon Burials at Orsett Causewayed Enclosure
A Saxon cemetery was placed within the Neolithic enclosure at Orsett. It seems that the remains of the Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure already by this time around 4,000 years old were used to provide the boundaries of the Saxon cemetery. Reuse of earlier monuments in this way seems to have been quite common. This picture shows a burial taking place, a grave has been dug and the line of a circular ditch marked out, once the body has been placed in the grave a ditch will be dug and a mound heaped above the burial, like the barrow mounds to the right of the picture.
