Splendid & Permanent Pageants
compiled by Nigel Brown.

The past is all around us in many forms - old buildings, the patterns of fields and farms, earthworks and many kinds of archaeological remains and finds. Explaining what these places may have looked like in their heyday can be very difficult, particularly when dealing with the highly fragmentary remains revealed by archaeological excavation.

One of the best and most vivid ways of doing this is to paint or draw a picture to show what the site might once have looked like. Such images can bring the past alive better than any written description, but it is worth remembering that these pictures are informed interpretations and only suggest what a place may have looked like at a particular time.

A selection of some of the best archaeological and historical reconstruction pictures of Essex sites is presented in this book.
